On the occasion of Africa Day, and coinciding with the 35th Anniversary of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC), the Vice-Rectorate for Internationalization, Mobility, and International Projection, in collaboration with Casa África, is organizing the ‘Bridge to Africa’ Congress from May 21 to 25. Cultural activities framed within this event will commence on Monday, May 20, with the inauguration of the Africarescente photography exhibition at the ULPGC Library (Tafira Campus).
More than 200 experts from around the world will gather at the Institutional Headquarters of ULPGC starting Tuesday, May 21, for the first scientific congress held in the Canary Islands focused on the African continent. The congress will address four strategic themes that shape the daily sessions: advancements and studies in health, the social sector, the environment, and the economic sector.
Among the experts participating in the first Bridge to Africa congress are about twenty researchers from ULPGC, who are currently undertaking scientific and academic projects and are partners in collaborative networks with Africa and its universities. They will specifically address areas such as marine sustainability, fishing and maritime resources, urban development projects, health training, medical technology, social and humanitarian action, climate change, food production, education, and human rights, among others.
Additionally, the various sessions of the Congress will feature 50 presentations and panel discussions from leaders of international projects related to Africa, experts, and members of African collaborative networks, entrepreneurs, and representatives of institutions working in African countries, as well as various global NGOs that carry out collaboration and cooperation projects with Africa.
The objective of this first congress held at ULPGC, in collaboration with Casa África, is to establish an international platform in the Canary Islands for knowledge and scientific projects addressing the main challenges and strategic plans related to the African continent.
The Casa África-ULPGC collaboration has integrated many activities from the África Vive program into the Bridge to Africa schedule. Casa África celebrates Africa Day on May 25 every year. Bridge to Africa and África Vive will culminate on May 25 with a grand concert on the Humanities Campus of ULPGC.
